Everyone in South Korea (but no one anywhere else) knows who Ahn ik-tae was: the staunch patriot who wrote the national anthem. Not so many knows what became of him. In 1943, his native land still under the Japanese yoke. Mr. Ahn settled far away-in Spain. He married a Dolores, and died in Spain Palma in 1956.

南韓에 있는 누구나가 다 (그러나 외부사람들은 아무도 그렇지 못하는 데) 安益泰가 누구였는 지를 잘 알고 있다. 그는 한국의 愛國歌를 쓴 志操 굳은 애국자였다. 아직 祖國이 일본의 멍애下 에 있었던 1943年에 멀리 떠나 스페인에 定着하고 Dolores라는 여자와 결혼해서 살다가 1956년에 스페인 Palma에서 죽었다.This vignette of patriotism's ambiguities can be gleaned from the Spanish pavilion at Taejon Expo '93. As with Ahn, so with the Expo: everyone in South Korea, but few anywhere else, knows Expo'93. Another Hispano-Korean connection: last year Seville, and this year it is Seoul Korea's turn to play host to an international exposition. The site is Taejon, a hitherto less-than-world-famous city, about 160 kilometers(100 miles) south-east of Seoul.
이 愛國揷畵의 不분명한 부분은 대전Expo'93에서 이삭으로 주을 수 있다. 안익태의 경우와 마찬가지로 대전Expo'93도 한국內에서는 모두가 다 알고 있고, 외국에서는 거의 아무도 모른다. 그밖에 또 하나의 한국과 스페인의 연관성으로서는 작년에는 Seville가, 그리고 금년에는 남한이 이 국제 Expo를 하게 됐다는 것이다. 개최 장소는 이, 세계급으로 알려져 있지는 않는, '대전'이란 도시로 그것은 서울東南方 160km인 곳이다.Taejon Expo opened on August 7th, for a three-month run. It was meant to be a modest affair, concentrating on economic development and ecological concerns. But the Koreans had grander plans. Strictly, it was not even their turn. But, fired by a success of the 1988 Olympics, the government made a big pitch to become the first developing country to hold an Expo.
대전 Expo는 3개월 예정으로 8월 7일에 개막했다. 이 것은 經濟발전과 環境문제에 관한 작은 행사로 꾸며진 것이였다. 그러나 한국사람들은 더 큰 計劃을 갖고 있었다. 그리고 따지자면 이번 Expo는 그들의 차례도 아니 였다. 그러나 88 Olympic의 성공에 힘입어 정부는 Expo를 개최하는 시초의 개발도상국이 되기 위해서 핏치를 올렸다.The resultant immodest affair has cost at least $ 1 billion. It covers a site almost one kilmeter square, much of which will stay open even after the Expo closes on November 7th. The temporary stuff is foregn: 108 countries are represented at Taejon. Some have tried hard. Sri Lanka has an 80strong team, all trained to speak Korean. Those very Korean voices shouting"Yoboseyo!" to potential customers for tea and trinkets emanate disconcertingly from Sinhalese maidens in bright yellow saris.
그 결과 조심성 없고 안하무인격인 이 행사는 최소한 1조 2000억원이 걸리게 되었다. 이 Expo는 1km 사방이란 자리를 찾이하는 데 11월 7일에 행사가 끝나도 대부분(구조믈들)은 그대로 남께 되고 한시적인 것은 외국의 것들만이다. 이 Expo에 108나라가 대표됐는 데 그 중에는 상당한 노력을 한 나라들도 있다. Sri Lanka는 한국말을 할 수 있게 훈련된 80명 의 팀을 파견했다. 茶나 장신구를 사줄만한 사람들에게 밝은 노란 빛 사리를 입은 Sinhalese 쳐녀들로부터 "여보세요"하는 소리가 不協和音的 으로 울러퍼진다.Not everyone was that keen. America refused at first to take part at all, but eventually succumbed to Korean pressure. There are long queues for the American pavilion, as well as lively interest in Seoul's new friends, China, Russia, and Vietnam, whose presence here not long ago would have been unimaginable.
모두가 다 관심을 갖었던 것은 아니다. 처음에 미국은 도대체 참가하는 것을 거절했었다. 그러나 결국은 한국의 압력에 굴복하고 말았다. 미국관 앞에는 긴 행렬이 있고, 지금까지 여기에 나올 것은 상상하기도 어려웠던 새 친구들 - 중국, 러시아, 월남관 등에도 큰 관심이 모여있다.Taejon Expo has hyped endlessly in Korea for months, so it was not surprising that at least 150,000 turned up in blazing sunshine on day one. August in Korea is a cruel month, and almost as many huddled under umbrella when Saturday's heatwave became Sunday's monsoon. Officiel expectations of 10m visitors sound plausible, unlike the distinctly elastic estimates for foreigners:a million, half a million, 300,000.
대전 Expo는 이미 몇 달동안 과장기대를 시켜왔기 때문에 초일에 그 뙤약볕 밑에 15만명이 구경을 온 것에 놀랄 것은 없다. 한국의 8월달은 지독한 것이여서 토요일의 열파 밑에서 양산 속에 기어들어간 사람들과 같을 정도의 인원수가 일요일의 장마에서 우산속으로 기어들어갔다. 관변측이 발표한 1000만명 관광객수는 가능하게 보이지만 100만, 50만 또는 30만이라고 하는 異國人 관광객수는 유동적인 추정이다.Taejon Expo is not really meant for foreigners. Every which way, from the loos(you squat)to the language,this is a Korean show. Nobody much speaks English and not a lot is written in it. The ubiquitous fast-food joints advertise "humberger jumbo"' but the word "jumbo"brings blank looks.(A tip:ask for "humburger set".)
대전엑스포는 진정 외국인을 위한 것은 안이다. (쪼구리고 앉아야 하는) 화장실로부터 공식용어에 이루기까지 이것은 한국의 쇼-이다. 아무도 영어를 안 하고 영어로 쓰인(written) 것도 별로 없다. 전세계에 없는 곳이 없는 패스트푸드店 들은 햄버-거 점보를 선전하지만 (영어에 익숙치 못해서) "Jumbo"라는 말은 무색할 다름이다.(힌트; 햄버-거-세트를 시키는 것이 나을 것이다)Taejon's main exhibits do not even pretend to be international. The queues are longest-up to half a kilometre on the opening weekend-at two dozen Korean-build futuristic pavilions. Within Samsung's space-themed Starquest pavilion, or Lucky-Golster's Technopia, or Sunkying's Imagination (a huge glittering metalic sphere), there are all manner of high tech displays. This correspondent tested them on his blase 13-year-old son. He was impressed If most of the technology is not yet Korean, chances are it soon will be.
대전Expo의 主展示物은 국제라는 것을 내세우지도 않는 다. 개막한 주말 에는 한국의 20여개의 미래지향적 파빌용(pavilions)들 앞에 數百미-터의 줄이 생겼다. '三星'의 宇宙주제의 '스타-쿠에스트館', '럭키-금성'의 '태크노피아館', 또는 '선경'의 상상館(거대한 뻔쩍거리는 금속球館) 속 에는 갖은 하이택 展示物이 있었다. 그래서 저자는 만사에 무관심한 13세 짜리 아들을 시험조로 대려가서 보였다. 아이에게는 印象的이였던 것 같다. 그 모든 기술은 아직 한국의 것은 아니었지만 곧 그렇게 될 것만 같은 느낌 을 줬다.Also striking is the tone. Although the Expo's official theme is environmentalism and development, the Korean pavilions unabashedly(부끄러움 없이, 태연하게) celebrate science and its quest(추구), with an optimism no longer fashionable(유행하는) in the West. Only in Paek Nam-june's witty scultures-smashed(세게 내려친) electric guitars and television sets, crushed(눌러 짜브러트린) into ancient Ford cars - does a more questioning(케묻는) post-modern note intrude(억지 진입). But Mr. Paek lives abroad. Most Koreans would still rather celebrate modernity, which here is still fresh and recent. Jadedness(진저리가 남) is yet to come.
역시 놀랄만한 것은 그 tone(調-느낌)이다. Expo의 공식의 제목은 '환경과 개발'이(어서 산업의 폐단과 관련되)지만 그 한국관들은 西方에서 는 이미 유행이 지난 樂觀을 갖고 태연하게 '科學과 이의 추구'에만 축하를 보내고 있다. 단지 백남준의 제치있는 '銅像으로 내려친 電氣기타-, 그리고 구형 포우드車에 박아넣은 TV' 만이 포스트 모던闖入(틈입=돌입)調의 의문 제기를 하고 있을 따름이다. 그러나 백남준은 외국에 살고 있다. 대부분의 한국인들은 아직까지는 이곳에서 新鮮하고 새로운 現代性을 축하하고 있을 뿐이고 (산업과 공학에) 진저리가 난다는 것은 아직 더 있어야 할것 같다.Despite last minutes nail-biting(긴장 및 좌절의) and the usual problem with the customs(which left one exhibition-room empty at the opening), Taejon Expo smells of success. The Koreans have done it again: they have fought big, and brought it off(완성하다,구출하다) spectacularly. The family group crowding the site include grand-mothers in traditional dress, old enough to have been born under feudalism(the last Korean dynasty ended only in 1910). Forty years ago, this was a landscape devasted by war and napalm. Even 30 years ago, Korea was Africa-poor.
마지막 순간까지의 긴장과 좌절 및 흔해빠진 세관과의 通關갈등(그래서 어느 한 방은 개막 때가지 비어 있기도 했지만)에 불구하고 대전 Expo는 성공한 것 같다. 한국사람들은 또 다시 해낸 것이다. 그들은 투쟁했고, (멋 있고) 화려 하게 완성한 것이다. 저 자리에 모여있는 저 가족들은 봉건시대에 태어 났을 가능성이 있는 할머니를 포함하고 있다(한국의 마지막 왕조는 1910 년에 끝났다). 40년전에 이곳은 전쟁과 내이팜彈으로 荒廢化한 곳이었고 30년전만 해도 이곳은 아프리카級의 빈곤이였다.Those who would understand Korea should remember how recent is the arrival of prosperity. In a sense, the entire country has jumped the queue(새치기하다) and elbowed its way to the front. Those who prize(or affect) the polish that comes with the habits of affluence may wince(질겁하다) at the rough mannners and tough method of these global parvenus; or smile condescendingly(겸손한 체하며) at their bright-eyed embrace of science's delights; or smugly note the imitativeness of Olympics-plus-Expo package (sure, the Japanese did it first).
한국을 이해하는 사람들은 그들이 번영권에 온 것이 최근이라는 것을 기억해야 한다. 어떤 뜻에 있어서 이 나라는 나라전체가 새치기를 하고, 앞자리를 향해서 팔꿈치 밀침을 했다고 말할 수가 있다. (歐美의) 풍요함 속에서 오는 바 윤택함을 좋아하는 사람들은 이 지구촌 parvenus(빠르브뉘- ;갑작히 거금은 벌었으나 합당한 禮法이나, 정신과 태도에 餘裕가 없는 꼴불견들)의 거치른 禮儀과, 강인한 手法 등에 질겁을 하거나, 그들이 반짝이는 눈으로 과학의 즐거움(歡喜)을 받아드리(고 다른 잡념이 없)는 것에 너그러운 미소를 띠거나, 아니면 잘난 척 (그들의) 올림픽+Expo묶음 으로 치룬 것이 일본의 경우와 무척 닮아 있음을 (或者는) 지적할 것이다 (사실 일본이 그렇게 했었다).Koreans still feel prickly about such attitudes. Yet now that their GDP is approaching $300billion, the 14th largest in the world, between Holland's and Australia's, their brash(성급한 경솔한 건방진) defensiveness could give way to a calmer acceptance of having indeed achieved. The chips in their technology are impressive enough; the chips on their shoulders(시비조) seem increasingly outmoded.
韓國人들은 그러한 태도에 대해서 아직 신경질적이다. 그러나 그 들의 GDP가 3조 달라- 에 가까워 네댈란드와 호주 사이에 끼어 世界 14位가 되고 보니 그들의 섬급한 防禦경향은 (이제는) 진정 이룩했다는 더 찬찬한 받아드림과 자리를 바꿀 것이다. 그들의 반도체chips 等 기술에 있어서의 業績들은 충분히 印象的인 것이기 때문에 그들의 시비조(chips)는 더욱 더 退潮하고 (조만간) 없어질 것이다.
