Women of the Choson Dynasty

To sum up the experiences of women during the Choson Dynasty, I offer a quotation from Kim Ok-yul, President of the Sookmyung Women's University:

"The women in the Yi period held a subordinate social position and did not enjoy the full rights of independent human beings 'under the influence of Confucian teachings' for 500 years. However, it is significant that Korean women were the foundation stone for the dynastic culture for 500 years without complaint by accepting their fate with resignation and perseverance. Women comprise half of the entire population in any period. The Yi gentlemen's accomplishments could not have been achieved without the help of the women in that period. However, women's subordinate position still remains and it is not too much to say that attitudes about women in the Yi Dynasty still linger on. Therefore, it is necessary to study women in the Yi period to shed light on today's women."
