Kim YoungsamPresident Kim Young-sam took the oath of office Feb. 25, 1993 pledging to build what he called a "New Korea" through reforms and change. The 65-year-old Kim succeeded President Roh Tae-woo in a nationally televised inaugural ceremony and swore to faithfully execute his duties during a five-year term. At the inaugural speech, the Chief Executive proclaimed that "the reforms we need must begin with three essential tasks. First, misconduct and corrupton must be rooted out. Second, the economy must be revitalized. Third, national discipline must be enhanced."
